We begin the new year with :
Some Effective Tips To Leap into the NEW YEAR and Keep Those HEALTHY NEW YEARS GOALS You Have Made With YOURSELF
From an Acupuncture / Craniosacral (CST) Perspective, here are some helpful tidbits we have found :
The ABC'S of Acupuncture / CST - for the new year: Part 1
Acupuncture and craniosacral therapy (CST) reminds us of our innate inner wisdom to heal. The driving idea behind acupuncture and CST is that we already have everything we need to be well. We hold the power to heal ourselves. This article incorporates a perspective from Acupuncture, Craniosacral Therapy and Psychotherapy to incorporate a whole body wellness.
A - Aqua
Appreciate Water
In acupuncture, each season has an associated natural element. Winter's is water.
There has been some studies that suggest a higher daily intake of water may help to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Start every day with a large glass of lukewarm water. Fill your favorite glass/bottle with 250mls water and drink it slowly, followed by taking some deep breaths. This is a great morning pick up to help keep your body feel hydrated and relaxed. In CST, the rhythm is like that of flowing water which is the cerebral spinal fluid being produced and absorbed in the body. Like the ebb and flow of the tide. Again like breathing in a slow rhythmic manner to help the body relax. Try counting your breath in for 6 then out again for 6. Similar to the rate of the CST rhythm.
B - Balance
Strive For Balance – YIN and YANG
Acupuncture is all about balance. The goal of treatment is to tonify (give to) areas of deficiency and reduce (take from) areas of excess. In CST, there is an exchange of energy. Energy is offered, if there are areas of deficiency then it is given, if there are areas of excess, it is taken away. This is dependent on what your body needs.
Here are 2 excellent tools for adding balance to your life:
1 - Be Like A Mountain. In addition to balancing deficiencies and excesses, acupuncture focuses on balancing yin and yang.
Yin qualities are: cold, dark, quiet, contracting, deficient, weak, delicate, soft-spoken, contemplative and introverted.
Yang qualities are: hot, bright, loud, firm, expanding, excessive, robust, energetic and chatty.
If everyday life starts to become too yang – too much of a high-energy, fast-moving nature. It is important to remember to add some yin qualities so that we remain balanced. ( retreating, reading a book, taking some time to just be )
In a meditation you can imagine yourself as a mountain. A mountain is the ultimate yin, solid, rooted and still, despite the winds swirling around it. When there seems to be a whirlwind, take a moment to think of yourself as a mountain. This will help you find some inner calm despite the “busy - ness” happening around you.
2 - Rub Your Ears
The ear, in acupuncture and reflexology, is a microcosm of the whole body, so ear points are used to address conditions that involve multiple systems. Since stress can truly wear the body down, treating the ears is considered an effective and efficient counter-measure.
Use your thumb and index finger to apply acupressure to the whole ear, moving from the top of the ear down to the earlobes. You can do this simultaneously on both sides.
C- Communicate with Nature
Humans are viewed as microcosms of the natural world that surrounds them. The natural elements are essential parts of all of us, and yet many of us fail to make time to commune with them, especially when the weather turns cold.
Taking just three minutes a day to notice the natural world around can be a refreshing de-stressor. Try finding a piece of nature that inspires peace or tranquility in you. It can be an old tree, a serene pond, or crystal white snow. Maybe it is just standing outside and feeling the solid earth under your feet, or the crisp wind against your face.
D – the D in de-stress
Stress can cause the body to feel many overloads, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Stress begins in the thoughts, this can be an important focus in psychotherapy. From our thoughts this causes the Amygdala, an almond shape component located in the limbic system or midbrain, it initiates our famous stress response - Fight or Flight – it creates an over production of a hormone called cortisol. Studies have linked cortisol to increased sugar cravings, increased appetite and added abdominal fat.
Lets work on our amygdalas – try some acupressure and craniosacral / brain curriculum treatments that can calm you. Since both acupuncture and CST work directly on the nervous system and treatments can focus on the Amygdala. We can show you CST and acupressure points for yourself for home self-care. Psychotherapy also helps people with stress to address the thoughts that may start the whole cycle of stress and anxiety.
